Hugo Chavez and Barack Hussein Obama

.......“The United States empire is on its way down and it will be finished in the near future, inshallah," Chavez told reporters, ending the statement with the Arabic phrase
for "God willing .........

......."Iran has every right . . . to develop atomic energy and to continue its research in that area," Chavez said at a joint appearance with Khatami. "All over the world, there is a clamor for equality . . . and profound rejection of the imperialist desires of the U.S. government. Faced with the threat of the U.S. government against our brother people in Iran, count on us for all our support.".......

........At a news conference after the speech, he further lambasted the United States and U.N., saying of the latter, "There is no way to save it."
The U.N. was founded in an era of two superpowers, he said. "The Soviet Union collapsed. The United States empire is on the way down and it will be finished in the near future, for the good of all mankind."
He also said the U.S. government was the "first enemy" of its people
........ ......"The grand destroyer of the world, and the greatest threat ... is represented by U.S. imperialism," Chavez said......

......On February 5th, Chavez responded with a similar comparison, saying "I think Hitler could be a nursery baby next to George W. Bush." He told a rally of supporters that Bush was "worse than Hitler" and vowed to buy more arms to defend his nation as their diplomatic relations deteriorated......

......Chavez described Merkel's conservative Christian Democratic Union party as "the same right wing that supported Hitler and fascism."
"Ms. Chancellor, you can go to ..." he said, pausing. "Because you are a lady, I won't say any more.".....

Hmm...is the point that President Obama must be an ally of Chavez, because he met with him and shook his hand? By that reasoning, President Reagan was a communist, as was President Nixon. Actually, though, by meeting with their adversaries President Nixon opened up meaningful relations with China and President Reagan helped bring about the downfall of communism in Russia. So, isn't it a good thing that President Obama is open to meeting with Chavez??

Don, I am actually not opposed to dialogue between the two leaders. My problem with this event and these photos is the obvious friendly manner in which Obama expressed himself to Chavez. Obama is the president of a country that Chavez has repeatedly insulted, demeaned and called to be destroyed. These photos will be viewed as weakness to our sworn enemies and will most certainly be paraded on the government run media in Venezuela to further legitimize his oppression of that people. You are absolutely correct about Reagan and Nixon. My impression from those meetings though was of very cold, diplomatic negotiations, Reagan even walked out on Gorbachev at one point. There wasn't any fist pumping, yucking it up or butt slapping going on.
If good things come of this, I will be the first to say I was wrong and gladly so. (Sidebar: I was wrong to support the establishment of Homeland Security. The worst case scenario has come true and it's powers are now being used to target and monitor American citizens. I thought this only happened in Communist/Dictatorial regimes.) For right now though, I think it was a mistake and I'm upset that my President would be so openly friendly with someone that hates us so much.
Let's hope I'm wrong here.

this may come down largely to a matter of style, and selectivity on the part of the media covering the event. For a much different view, take a look at this: http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2009/04/behind-the-scen.html

It appears that Barack gave Hugo a piece of his mind.

Maybe he is copying Teddy Roosevelt, speak softly but carry a big stick :). I do hope he has a different tone away from the cameras. Chavez is interfering in many South American countries including Peru. Patty's mother was very concerned during the last elections as an openly Socialist candidate almost won the presidency and was supported by Chavez. We were considering plans to move them here. Again, I hope that I am dead wrong about this but here is an article that just came across my radar screen. This gentlemen expresses my point of view much more eloquently:
